Miscellaneous manuscripts, 1524-1542.

Four documents written by Georg Spalatin, or issued by his office. Three documents, dated 1524 , 1533, and 1542, are reports of news items (Zeitung) with no specific addressee. The remaining document, dated 1542, is a letter signed by Spalatin, addressed to Heinrich von Einsiedel, making a request in the context of the visitations of parishes ordered by Elector Johann Friedrich I of Saxony. The 1524 report, possibly written from Nuremberg (Nurenbergk), tells of news received from Venice about plans of the French to attack Italy, with mention of Genoa, Florence, and the Marquisate of Saluzzo; and news received from Antwerp (Andorff) about plans for a marriage between the emperor (Charles V) and the daughter (Mary) of the king of England (Henry VIII). The 1533 report, apparently written from Leipzig, lists the following 7 items: 1. in the context of the struggle for the reformation in Leipzig, the calling of a group of 125 individuals to city hall, 2. a new writing or action of Georg, Duke of Saxony, concerning Luther, 3. the sentencing of Haubitz of Taucha in Leipzig, 4. peace between the Turks and Ferdinand I (then king of Bohemia and Hungary, later emperor), 5. the arrival of emperor Charles V in Barcelona from Genoa, 6. the marriage of Henry VIII of England to a new wife and the arrangements regarding the former queen, and 7. lack of news concerning the strengthening of the alliance (Bundt). The 1542 report, presumably written in Altenburg, is in two parts, evidently summarizing news received in 2 letters (Zeitung dem Spalatino auss Osterreich inn zweien Briefen zukommen). The first part, in 12 items, refers to war against the Turks and the role of Joachim II, Elector of Brandenburg; the intention of King Ferdinand to move into Hungary; a church ordinance (Kirchenordnung) in Brandenburg; the intention of Bishop Friedrich Nausea of Vienna to have a meeting with Johann Agricola (Eisleben) about the new faith; and Nausea's and Johann Eck's angry reaction to the spread of the new faith to the Netherlands. The second part, in 7 items, tells of an event in Vienna (possibly concerning the war against the Turks) that included a sermon of Bishop Nausea, and a procession in which King Ferdinand took part but not the Elector of Brandenburg or Duke (later Elector) August of Saxony; and the appointment of the Elector of Brandenburg to administer the oath to the troops outside Vienna.

Spalatin was a friend of Luther and supporter of the reformation. Having first come to the Saxon court in 1508 as a tutor to the nephew and heir of Friedrich III, Elector of Saxony, Spalatin subsequently served as the elector's secretary and adviser from 1516 to 1525. After the death of Friedrich in 1525, Spalatin moved to Altenburg, in Thuringia, where he was a canon and then superintendent, and played a key role in the establishment of the new church. He also continued to be a trusted adviser ...
